Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick- Life and Legend

Saint Patrick (387?-461?) was a Romano-Briton and Christian missionary who is most generally recognised as Patron Saint of Ireland (although Brigid of Kildare and Columba are also formally Patron Saints). When he was about fourteen he was kidnapped from Britain by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After entering the church he went back to Ireland as a Bishop and worked as missionary during the second half of the fifth century. Legends claim that he banished snakes from the island and used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Because of this it is now a symbol of Ireland.
The first written accounts of his life date from the seventh century, and by the eighth century he came to be revered as a Patron Saint. He is also the Patron Saint of Nigeria, Montserrat (a Caribbean island) New York and Boston, as well as being the Patron Saint of Engineers, and against snakes.

Saint Patrick’s Day in Ireland

Saint Patrick’s Day (March 17th) became a feast day in the seventeenth century and was declared a public holiday in Ireland in 1903. The first Saint Patrick’s Day parade took place in Dublin in 1931 and in 1996 the first Saint Patrick’s Day Festival was held. Saint Patrick’s Day is a Bank Holiday in Northern Ireland.

…And around the world

Saint Patrick’s Day is widely celebrated in many countries, including: Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the USA, New Zealand and Argentina. March the seventeenth is also a national holiday on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, where it commemorates a failed slave uprising which occurred on that date in 1798.

And the songs are:

I'll tell me ma

I'll tell me ma when I go home,
The boys won't leave the girls alone.
They pulled me hair, they stole me comb,
But that's all right 'til I get home.
She is handsome, she is pretty,
She's the belle of Belfast City,
She goes courtin', a one, two, three
Please won't you tell me who is she?

Now Albert Mooney says he loves her,
Now the boys are fighting for her.
Knockin' on the door and they're ringin' the bell, sayin'
"Oh my true love, are you well?"
Out she comes as white as snow
With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes.
Auld Johnny Murphy says she'll die
If she doesn't get the fellow with the roving eye.

I'll tell me ma when I go home,
The boys won't leave the girls alone.
They pulled me hair, they stole me comb,
But that's all right 'til I get home.
She is handsome, she is pretty,
She's the belle of Belfast City,
She goes courtin', a one, two, three
Please won't you tell me who is she?

Let the wind and the rain and the hail come high,
And the snow come shoveling from the sky.
She's as nice as apple pie,
And she'll get her own lad by and by!
When she gets a lad of her own
She won't tell her ma when she comes home.
Let them all come as they will
It's Patrick Murphy she loves still!

I'll tell me ma when I go home,
The boys won't leave the girls alone.
They pulled me hair, they stole me comb,
But that's all right 'til I get home.
She is handsome, she is pretty,
She's the belle of Belfast City,
She goes courtin', a one, two, three
Please won't you tell me who is she?

The Black Velvet Band

Chorus:
Her eyes they shone like diamonds
They called her  the queen of the land
And her hair  hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

In a neat little town they call Belfast, apprentice to trade I was bound
Many an hours sweet happiness,  I spent in that neat little town
’Til a sad misfortune came over me, which caused me to stray from the land
Far away from me friends and relations, to follow that black velvet band

Her eyes they shone like diamonds
They called her  the queen of the land
And her hair  hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

When I went walking down Broadway, meaning not long for to stay
When who should I meet but this pretty fair maid trapsing along the highway
A goldwatch she took out from his pocket and placed it right in to my hand
The very first thing that I said was “bad luck to the black velvet band”

Her eyes they shone like diamonds
They called her  the queen of the land
And her hair  hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

Before the judge and the jury, the both of us had to appear
The gentleman he swore to the jewlary the case aginst us was clear
”Seven years transportation, to be spent faraway from the land
Far away from your friends and relations, betrayed by the black velvet band"

Chorus:
Her eyes they shone like diamonds
They called her  the queen of the land
And her hair  hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
